for me the regular type of diaper bag is most useful, becoz in the 1st it is especially made for that function and i agree with u fro me bakpak can make ur things crowded, it is not practical for baby's needs, especially in times when you need to get the baby's needs immediately

To be honest ANY diaper bag you get is going to be cramped, atleast with me. It seems the bigger the diaper bag I get the MORE I want to put in there LOL.. =) I'm always just trying to Cram just a little more..hehe
But, if you arent that fond of it as far as looks then I think its ok that you get a new one..OR just get a new one for your outtings, and let your husband use that one.
This is what I pack..
4 Bottles w/water in them
Can of formula
3-4 Blankets (some heavier some lighter)
1-2 Outfits depending on where we are going and how long we will be.
Baby Sunscreen/Sunglasses
Infant Tylenol (we bought 1 ecspecially for our bag, Teething pain can get BAD!)
LOTS of toys
Diapers
Wipes
Burp Cloth…For drool, spit up, or milk on my babys face
& His sippy w/juice in it.
Plus a bowl, spoon, & a pack of baby food just in case we arent home for our 6 o'clock feeding..
Of course you wont need to worry about that till later.. =)

I do pack a lot but, I HATE going out and realizing I wish I had brung this..It never fails when I do leave it at home I wish I would have brung it. So, Do what you think is going to work best for you. You can always try this one out when your baby gets here and if you dont like it then get a new one =)

I have 3…
A small one for VERY short trips..like drs office.
A larger one for LOONG trips and one that is just a little smaller then my big one that I got because it fit so well under my stroller when the bigger one didn't.
We just had to figure out what worked best for us, so once your baby is born you'll figure it out!! =)

This is what I carry in my diaper bag:

Diapers (4 to 5)
Wipes (travel case)
Changing pad
Baby lotion (travel size)
Ointment (travel size)
Diaper disposal bags
Hand sanitizer
Mini first aid kit
Ready to serve bottles (2)
Bibs (2), burp cloths (2), and washcloths (2)
Pacifier and paci-pod
A onesie and a change of baby clothing
A receiving blanket
Toys (2)

Space is essential, but why don't you let your husband have the bag that he likes and you just get another that you like.

If at all possible, I would try to keep it for DH. You can get yourself another one for most of the time. Often times, guys don't like carrying the feminine diaper bags that are out there! But if that isn't possible, then don't worry about it! You are the one carrying it mostly, I'm sure.
What I HAD to carry with me other than the duhs of diapers and wipes was at least 1 or 2 changes of clothes! My daughter was exclusively breastfed, so we never had bottles, but we always had runny diapers! Also, hand sanitizer!!! But that is small and can be tucked in almost any side pocket. That was honestly the only ESSENTIALS that I can think of at the moment… But of course my daughter is 1 now so it's hard for me to remember! Haha! Good luck squeezing it all in there!

The only thing I find I use every time I leave in the insulated side pocket. I have used mine for 8 months and not found I need something more.

I have the Columbia backpack diaper bag, I think it is great.

Insulated pocket on one side,
keys, wallet and cellphone holder on the other side,
inside has a diaper pad in a seperate flap where I also put the diapers and wipes,
The rest of the bag (all the inside) is for clothes, blankets, toys, hat, sunscreen……

Any bag you buy will be cramped unfortunately. I have gone through 3, and find the same predicament with all of them.

The essentials (for daily errands /local visits)for my 6 mos old are:
3 – 4 diapers
Small pack of wipes (you can buy then at the store, then refill it)
Diaper Cream
Changing pad
Spit up cloth
Spare pacifier
Bottle insulator (I use a separate one with a cooler pack vs one in the bag itself)
A few toys (small ones to teeth on, nothing big or bulky)
A nail file/clipper (just in case, have not needed it in an emergency yet)
A small empty grocery bag (for disposal of the diaper if I have to change it in the car)

If I am going to be gone a bit for a visit, I add:
Extra change of clothes
Baby food/spoon

OK…everyone is different, but this is what is in my diaper bag all the time and yes, its crammed too.

-tylenol
-3 washcloths
-mini size soap and lotion
-diapers 4-5, travel pack wipes, diaper cream
-extra change of clothes (ie. onesie, pants or sleeper, socks, sweater)
-pacifier and extra one
-2-3 toys
-change – at least 2$ in quarters
-once older….bowl of snacks and sippy cup
-optionals for me: nursing pad, tampon/pad, tylenol, bandaid, gum
-wallet and house keys
-purel or other antiseptic wipe – travel size
-blanket – can double as change pad if you do't already have one and then can use if it gets windy
-obviously bottles if you're using them and formula or powder mix

Mine doubles as my purse – I dont carry anything else, and take out wallet when I go to a store and put in pocket or carseat or stroller

For just daily use a change of clothes, diapers, wipes, extra pacifier. Maybe a jacket or extra blanket depending on the weather

there are bags that you can buy at Walmart for putting the dirty diapers in. I used them it was nice if you had to change a dirty diaper in the car and had no place to throw it away right away. You could also put soiled clothes in them.
If you are using formula there are containers that you can buy that hold enough for 3 bottles premeasured.
I have had some of my daycare parents keep a bottle of water in the diaper bag just in case to mix formula.

as long as the bag holds diapers, changes of clothing, diaper cream/powder, a towel or mat for changing, and extra bottle or two,an extra pacifier,wipes and your keys and wallet it doesn't matter what it looks like...or for that matter if it's a backpack or not...I've used big beach bags and used zip lock bags to hold stuff together. use something comfortable to you, easy to find stuff in and just enjoy baby. After all that is just stuff he needs to be comfortable your what he needs to thrive!

For a newborn you will want to put diapers, wipes, burp cloth or 2, a couple complete changes of clothes, blanket, jacket, travel size diaper rash ointment, and if your baby needs it a pacifier. If you are bottle feeding, you will want to take enough bottles for your outing.
